lyrics

I Leave the city through the tunnel
In the darkness I might find
A little light bent at the end
But most I’ve left behind

Into New Jersey’s shadowed garden
The sun is in my eyes
Heading west would have been best
In the morning’s eastern shine

But I’ll follow the road to home
as behind me turns to night

I chase the setting sun
Towards the horizon
It sank below
Now just a glow

But I get a bit confused
Because filling my rear view
Is haze
From a city scape

when i navigate by light
New York’s is a fright-
-ening one
A second setting sun

Through hours of Pennsylvania
Lumbering mountains loom
From peaks i can peek shining cities
Good - I need to stop for gas soon

Onto flattened out Ohio
Rub my eyes with my sleeve
The light I’m focusing on now
Must be Akron or the Cleve

These roads all look the same
Passing under my headlights

I’ve never learned to find
The North Star in the sky
Orion’s sparkled eyes
Or my mind’s relative size

I can never discern in time
planes or satellites
Planets or fireflies
Semis or Christmas lights
big cities or the sunrise
at dawn
so ill just keep driving on

Once I get to Indiana
Another coffee and a stretch
The light now keeping me awake
The cherry on my cigarette

Behind me dawn begins to crack
Leaking rays into the sky
But Chicago’s penultimate glow
Looks like a western sunrise

One last push though the city traffic
The streetlights turn off as I park

i flee the rising sun
from the mirrored horizon
it creeps above
one last final shove

but i get turned around
because filling up my foreground
is haze
another city scape

so i navigate by light
my bedside lamp inviting
me home
to rest my bones

I flip off the switch
As dawn shines bright and rich
Through my window
A warm pleasing glow
